Atypical Odontalgia

Atypical odontalgia is one type of dental pain, in which no pathological change in a tooth or the periodontium can be detected. The definitive diagnosis for atypical odontalgia can be done, when no pathological conditions of head and neck have been found. The characteristic of atypical odontalgia is the constant pain in a tooth. That pain on a tooth cannot be aggravated by the external stimuli, including cold, hot, chewing or biting. All conventional dental treatments for dental pain fail to relief that pain. The exact pathophysiology of atypical odontalgia is still unclear, however several previous studies proposed that atypical odontalgia is one of the neuropathic pain. To support this proposed hypothesis, it has been shown that the most effective therapy of atypical odontalgia is the use of the tricyclic antidepressant drugs.
